I'm working on a Drag 101 makeup video, but until then, I wanted to introduce you to some looks I've done on my channel!

When I started my YouTube channel during the pandemic, I knew that I wanted to do "get ready with me" style videos, but I also knew that I wasn't the typical influencer girlie on the interwebs! I'm a drag queen! My looks are big and bold, brightly colored, and I shave off my eyebrows, because dedication!
I also know that while my skills have definitely improved over time, I'm not a makeup artist. I'm never going to serve the Instagram perfect looks that you see on social media. I wanted to post makeup looks and process videos that showcased the level of talent and experience that I do have with a very clear understanding that I make mistakes! Sometimes things turn out wonky! And when I sit down to paint, it's much more important to me that the whole experience be fun than look perfect.
That's how Get Ratchet With Me was born! I wanted to make videos with the idea that even if your look comes out busted or it doesn't look the way you intended, or you picked the wrong foundation shade, whatever - if you had fun, then that makeup application is a success!
As I said, I want to do some Drag 101 makeup videos where we go through the whole process from start to finish, talk about techniques, and all of that good instructional stuff that you expect from a tutorial. They will still be fun (your girl got jokes!) but they will be a little more pulled together, a little more profesh, a little more intentional.
These videos...are not that. They may have some coarse language and more than a few Dad jokes (sorry in advance!). But they also show off different makeup applications that may inspire you to create your own signature looks. Please enjoy them in that spirit!
XOXO

Y'all, I love this look. This purple palette is gorgeous, and the pop of green just sends me. I know that I'm not the best makeup artist out there, but I'm going to toot my own horn here - this look is fierce! I love to use an unexpected pop of color to shake things up in a look, and that's exactly what I've done here! Try it out!
What I like about this video is that it's a great way to shake things up if you aren't sure what kind of look you want to do, or you're feeling uninspired, do something random! For this video, I opened a Color Reveal Barbie and used the colors of the doll and her accessories to decide my look! Get creative! Put movie titles on little slips of paper and draw one out at random, and use that to inspire your look. Or Google an odd collection of words ("future floral fireworks" for example) and see if something on the Images tab gets you feeling inspired. If you're feeling overwhelmed with possibilities, sometimes it's nice to let something else pick for you!
See if a trend that is floating around inspires you, even if it's not your "typical" style. There was a moment where yellow blush was really trending, and I'd been wanting to try the liquid blushes from Made by Mitchell, so I turned that into a whole thing. Even if it doesn't become a staple look, it can be fun to push yourself out of your comfort zones. And don't feel like you need to buy every new trending product - I know, that's a bit of a "do as I say, not as I do" moment! But seriously! If you just want to try something and you're not sure you're going to stick with it, don't feel pressured to but the newest, hottest thing that is just going to end up gathering dust in your drawer. I bought the yellow and orange liquid blushes to try this, but if you want to recreate it, if you have yellow and orange eyeshadows, then you have yellow and orange blush! Be aware of product label warnings (especially around lips and eyes) but beyond that, these products can be used in different and creative ways. Something might be formulated to be easier to use in a certain way, but that doesn't mean that it has to be used that way. Have fun!
Here's another video using a Color Reveal Barbie to inspire the look, but I wanted to include this one as a reminder that sometimes things will go wrong. You'll be blending and the colors won't look right, you'll draw your eyebrows on crooked (just me?!), something!
Don't get discouraged - makeup is supposed to be fun! It just washes off in the end, so work through the mistakes and see what you come up with. As you practice and grow, you'll find yourself making less mistakes, or at least making different mistakes. And sometimes, your "mistake" will give you a look that you love that you hadn't even thought of!
This was a fun one to do, and definitely took me out of my comfort zone! And there are lots of drag performers whose looks include different colors for their foundation! I'm probably not going to be bringing this look to a show anytime soon, but it was a lot of fun seeing what I would look like as a live action Simpsons character! And other people must have enjoyed it as well: as of this writing, this is the most viewed video on my channel, and the first video to break 100 views!
IMPORTANT: I think playing with colorful foundations can be a lot of fun, but it's also important to be mindful of how you are doing it. Blackface is a particularly disgusting part of our country's history, so I would definitely suggest not using makeup to try and darken your skintone in a way that suggests you are playing around with race or ethnicity. If you aren't aware of the history of blackface, I would suggest doing a little research, and keep it cute and respectful. There are lots of fun colors to try that don't reflect living people on this planet - except maybe Violet Beauregard from that Willy Wonka movie, but that's probably a low risk option!
I'm including this video because I love green, and I love a monochromatic look, so I thought it could be fun to show you how one comes together for me. I know that Jeffree Star is a controversial figure, and I've been all over the map with him, personally and on my channel/social media. I've been planning a video for a while talking about Jeffree Star and about internet discourse for a while, but let's just say that I am not entirely comfortable with Star and his antics, and I try to minimize the presence of his brand on my channel, but I also don't throw out my content that I've worked really hard on just to make other people more comfortable. Do with that what you will, and I hope you'll tune in when my video comes out...eventually.
Finally, since Jeffree Star is already here, let's go ahead and add this one. This is a pretty signature look for me, but what was fun about this video was that it was produced in the first year of the pandemic as part of Dakota OutRight's virtual Pride celebration! We couldn't gather in person, so instead we did a bunch of fun virtual content to build community online. I chose Jeffree Star because this was before the whole "Bye Sister" Dramageddon 2 mess with Tati and James Charles and so the world at large had a different impression of Star, and also because, love him or hate him or anything in between, Jeffree Star Cosmetics is a queer-owned makeup brand, and I wanted to showcase that during this Pride celebration. We also talk about some Pride symbols, so there is some learnin' to be had as well!
This video features a couple of looks that I did with the Blend Bunny Machina palette (which was generously gifted to me by the brand), but I'm posting this link because it will connect you not only to this video (which I hope you'll enjoy and also showcases a moment where things go wrong and I had to pivot - always learning!) but also to the full playlist of my GRWM videos. As new videos get added, they will become part of this playlist, so this is a great link to check out if you want to see if there is something new!
I hope you enjoyed these looks, and I hope you found something that inspires you while you're on your own makeup journey. And look for more Drag 101 makeup content coming soon!
