31 Days Of Halloween!

Ever since the world kinda sorta fell apart, and with this pandemic raging, I haven’t really been feeling like watching a ton of horror.  But ready or not: spooky season is upon us, and I figured what better way to get into the “spirit” of things (yuk yuk) than to do the 31 Days of Halloween Challenge: watching 31 horror films through the month of October!

I went through all of the streaming services that I belong to, as well as a couple of DVD options that I’ve been meaning to get to, and I initially created a list of 50 movies which I then narrowed down to 31.  Some of them I’m watching over again, and some of them are brand new.  Some are more traditional horror, and some of them are more horror comedies.  But all of them are movies that I’m very excited to make a part of my spooky season this year!

Here’s my list, along with where I found them first (though many of the movies were available on several services):

AMAZON PRIME:

Midsommar **
Hereditary **
Population 436
Anna & The Apocalypse **
You’re Killing Me
Train to Busan
Suspiria (2018)
Alice, Sweet Alice
Children of the Corn **
Night of the Living Dead (Colorized) **

AMAZON RENTALS:

Suspiria
Black Christmas (2019) **

NETFLIX:

The Babysitter **
The Babysitter: Killer Queen
The Girl With All The Gifts
Little Evil
Oh My Ghost

SHUDDER:

Ganja & Hess
Spiral
Blood Quantum
Room
The Ranger

HULU:

Greener Grass

DVD:

Halloween **
Halloween 2 **
Halloween 4 **
Halloween 5 **
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers **
Halloween H20 **
Halloween Resurrection **
Night of Something Strange

14 of the movies are ones that I have seen before, but the Halloween movies in particular I haven’t seen for well over a decade (the middle of the series I haven’t seen since probably high school or undergrad).  I didn’t include much indie horror on my list because even though I’ve been staying away from most horror, indie films have been the ones I am much more likely to watch, so I mostly stuck with Hollywood horrors (though Night of Something Strange is one that I picked up at Days of the Dead a few years ago and just haven’t gotten to, so I figured it was time!).  Night of the Living Dead is one that I’ve seen several times, but it’s such a classic, and I’ve never watched the colorized version before, so I thought that could be fun.

I went with the Halloween movies because I have several box sets that collect horror franchises, and though I’ve watched through the other two of the “big 3” slasher franchises (Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street), I’ve never gotten around to watching the Halloween set.  I had Halloween 3 on my original list of 50, but as I was eliminating, I decided to ditch that one since it’s not actually about Michael Myers.  A little later this month, look for a separate post where I share the 19 movies that made it to the short list, but eventually got eliminated!

And if you’d like to see reactions and reviews throughout the month, you can follow my horror community page, Miss Jaye’s Friday Night Frights!  I’ll be charting my journey through the list over there, giving thoughts and reviews, maybe even doing some lives!  It’s a fun little community, and I’d love to have you join us!
